Arctic Comfort Heating and Air Conditioning Warns of EPA Ramp Up on R22 Freon Phase Out

According to a major heating and air conditioning publication, the EPA is expected to reduce this year’s production of new R22 Freon by 16 million pounds to just 39 million. That is about 30 percent less this year than last, and would make 71 million pounds cut since 2010. However, this expected reduction could change as the EPA has not finalized its long pending 2012-2014 Allocation Adjustment Rule. Some suspect the EPA may even cut an additional 6.5 million pounds off the 2013 allocation.

What does this mean for homeowners? There are still many homes that have R22 Air Conditioning Systems. Homeowners need to be aware that R22 Refrigerant also known as Freon, is getting scarce, which drives the price up. Due to scarce supplies and the unknown EPA ruling of this year’s allotment, suppliers of R22 Freon are restricting the quantities that air conditioning dealers may purchase daily and weekly.

Homeowners are going to have to make tough choices. A homeowner with a R22 Air Conditioning System that needs Freon is going to have to decide whether to invest their money in the skyrocketing price to add R22 Freon to their system, or to invest the money towards replacing the system with a new higher efficient condenser and evaporator coil that uses the new R410A Freon. This will save them 30 to 60 percent on their electric bill; the utility savings also helps pay for the system.

The homeowner may also qualify for a Federal Tax Credit up to $500, a Utility Credit up to $700 and a Manufacturer Rebate. In today’s market, a new Air Conditioning and Heating System could very well be the best investment a homeowner can make. It is an investment that saves money and provides comfort. An Air Conditioning System typically lasts 10-15 years.

Arctic Comfort advises, if an air conditioning unit is in the 10-15 year age range, the compressor has failed, components are frequently replaced or needing to add costly Freon, then it’s probably time to replace the air conditioning system. Get as much information as possible on the available options and make the best choice for the budget.

The higher the efficiency, the more the utility savings; that means more money in the homeowners pocket, not the utility companies. Chicago Businessman Marks World Plumbing Day-March 11- by Championing Clean Water in Africa

In most places on the planet, this basic building block for life is taken for granted – open the tap and there it is. However, in 2013, many countries still lack ready access to safe, clean water.

Chicagoan Don Arnold, a 50-year veteran of the U.S. plumbing industry, is striving to change that unhappy reality for families in East Africa. Utilizing “slow-sand filtration,” a basic technology more than 200 years old, Arnold is working with Safe Water Team-Kenya (SWT-K), a subsidiary of the Michigan nonprofit Safe Water Team, Inc., to introduce BioSand water filtration units in villages throughout that country. SWT-K recently shipped 2,250 of these filters to its new distribution center that opened last year in western Kenya.

Arnold’s professional journey – from developing modern plumbing technologies for Western manufacturers to meeting the basic water needs of the poor in Africa – began during this first visit to Kenya and Uganda in 2008. “I was struck by the appalling kinds of water most people are forced to use there,” recalls Arnold.

Motivated to find a practical water-filtration solution that required minimal upkeep, Arnold landed on the BioSand filter, a point-of-use iteration of a technology that has been around since the 1800s. He subsequently joined forces with the Triple Quest division of Cascade Engineering, the supplier and licensee of a BioSand filtration unit that is marketed under the Hydraid brand name. About the size of a tall waste basket, the simple system can filter as many as 75 gallons of potable water a day.

“Using just common sand and gravel as the filtering media, a naturally-forming biological layer typically destroys more than 90% of the bacteria and viruses in the water, as well as all the parasites. In simple terms, ‘the good guys eat the bad guys,’” explains Arnold.

During the Exhibit, TRIC showcased its ‘historical’ 1998 era (20 ton) Pipe Bursting unit, in the Rehab Showcase. In it’s booth, TRIC showcased the Municipal M50 unit, in a “TRIC’d Out” Utility Box, designed for protection and maintainance of the unit. A number of old friends from the industry re-introduced themselves to TRIC, in addition to new partners and future business clients. Tres Tuttle of Ritmo America, came by to share information about the 26 Gamma Pipe fusion machine and Ritmo’s Electrofusion firing units. “TRIC’s Exhibit really showcases the turnkey system that you offer contractors in the field,” said Mr. Tuttle.

NASTT (North American Society for Trenchless Technology) headlined day 2 of the UCT conference with it’s Pipe Bursting Best Practices course. Overall UCT provides many opportunities for better understanding Underground Construction Methods and Certification Programs.
